Demagi K Herath

Demagi Herath is a dedicated PhD candidate at Deakin University's School of Medicine, specializing in paediatric bone cancer and epigenetics. With a Bachelor of Science and an honours year in molecular biology from Deakin University - Burwood, Demagi has a solid foundation in scientific research, exemplified by a project on Saccharomyces cerevisiae and cell cycle regulation. During and after her honours, Demagi worked as a casual academic, teaching undergraduates multiple units, including biochemistry, biology, microbiology, physiology, and genomics. In 2019, she expanded their expertise internationally by moving to Sri Lanka, where she served as a Research and Development Scientist at a leading FDA-approved herbal pharmaceutical company. There, she gained extensive experience in quality control, alongside their research work. Driven by a passion for research, particularly in paediatric cancer, Demagi returned to Deakin University to pursue a PhD. Her work aims to uncover new insights into paediatric cancer, to make a significant impact on the lives of affected children. Beyond their academic and professional endeavours, she is a passionate volunteer, promoting awareness of HIV/AIDS, supporting reforestation efforts, and organizing blood and organ donation campaigns. They are also an avid food enthusiast who enjoys exploring various cuisines from different cultures.
